Messaging framework for a recognition program

When a global medical company partnered with O.C. Tanner for their internal recognition, I developed this strategic framework to help their HR team seamlessly roll out the new program.

This client is a global medical technology company operating in 150+ countries.

This framework is your go‑to resource for making the most of our Recognize program. It provides a shared understanding of what recognition means in our culture, why it matters, and some key messages you can use in your communications.

Foundational Narrative

Why Recognition Matters

At [Company Name], recognition is a uniting force that helps us appreciate everyone's unique talents and shared commitment to living our values. When people work safely, build trust, show respect, and help shape our future, those efforts deserve to be seen and celebrated. Recognize is how we make that happen—ensuring every employee, regardless of role, region, or team, feels valued for what they contribute to our global mission.

Audience & Tone

Leaders

Leaders are the heart of recognition because teams look to them for support and direction. A great leader recognizes intentionally and often.

When communicating with leaders about Recognize:

  • Encourage them to celebrate all efforts, big and small. Achievements matter, but so do the everyday wins that add up over time.

  • Remind leaders that recognition is a powerful tool. It helps build trust, foster belonging, and inspire employees to do their best work.

  • Provide best practices for recognizing well: Express thanks often. Be timely and specific. When possible, connect recognition to a company value to reinforce the importance of safety, integrity, respect, and growth.

Employees

Building people-centered teams across a global workforce requires an inclusive program, one that makes everyone feel seen, valued, and inspired to recognize one another. When communicating with employees about Recognize:

  • Emphasize our shared mission and legacy. Every person plays a role in building a safer world, and that matters.

  • Stay true to our established brand voice, while allowing for a more celebratory tone. Recognition should always feel uplifting.

  • Encourage sincere appreciation. Recognition is most meaningful when gratitude is specific, authentic, and connected to real contributions.
